Solo Show „Viron Erol Vert. Atoms, Soul, Senses“

13.05.2022 - 29.07.2022

Opening: Friday, May 13th, 2022, 6 p.m.

Villa Romana, Florence

Viron Erol Vert uses the garden pavilion of the Villa as a light relationship space. The glass fronts are covered with 32 different coloured foils, in the interior six geometric bodies act as contact organs and as many fans let velvet ribbons flutter. On them are quotations from Lucretius’s De Rerum Natura. Viron Erol Vert read this book during his stay in Florence in 2018. Written in the 1st century B.C., this instructional poem in six volumes is a critical religious text about the construction of society and culture in a world of atoms. Viron Erol Vert takes up the impetus of the Roman poet and philosopher to set calmness of mind against fear and creates a minimalist space for it.

In recent years, Viron Erol Vert has created a variety of impressive, hallucinatory escape rooms, starting with his 2017 Dreamatory in Berlin, the Ambereum at the Riga Biennale (RIBOCA) in 2018 and, lastly, at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark in 2019. They are all rooms that filter out the outside world, creating quiet zones for meditation, reflection, and encounters. On six evenings during the MANIFESTIAMO months (May-July), the Villa Romana Pavilion will also provide space for concerts, poetry readings, listening sections, and performances.

Viron Erol Vert is a visual artist living between Berlin, Athens, and Istanbul. His cultural background, located between Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, is reflected in all his works, which are inspired by family narratives, scientific and religious texts, and multicultural identities. In 2018 he was awarded the Villa Romana Prize and spent ten months in Florence.
