Group Show „The collection: dialogues. Volume 1: The History between persistence and criticism“ with Tim Berresheim

27.10.2022 - 05.02.2023

Collegium – Space for creation, research and exhibition of contemporary art, Arévalo

Collegium's permanent collection opens a series of exhibitions that, alternating with the curatorial program where prestigious signatures of the international art scene participate, proposes a dialogue between artworks from our collection and substantial pieces from other collections, private or public, always arbitrated from an inclusive and heterogeneous intellectual perspective.

The history between persistence and critique, curated by Aldones Nino, explores a series of non-linear conceptions of the passage of time through the works of thirty artists from around the world. Most of them belong to the permanent collection of Collegium, which is accompanied, to complete this overview, by loans from other institutions such as the MUSAC in León or the CA2M in Madrid.

The exhibition is structured around three thematic nuclei. The first one, entitled Ways of understanding history, questions hegemonic narratives and vindicates artistic practice as one of the legitimate ways to elaborate that discourse without excluding areas, subjects or voices. Educational processes, the second core, proposes a look at teaching as a system capable of articulating, or also disarticulating, the status quo. Finally, Belief and present explores the weight of religions in today's world and how it affects some contemporary artistic practices. The themes of the exhibition also correspond to the three main connections that root Collegium in Arevalo and in the Jesuit school that will house it: history and heritage, education and religious legacy.

Collection dialogues aspires to become a series of exhibitions in which different parts of the collection are exhibited in relation to works from other sources, generating different proposals and narratives each time, always in line with the curatorial lines and themes that define Collegium and its program. The history between persistence and criticism will be the first exhibition in this series, which will unfold over the next few years, generating new dialogues with other collections.
